The Coeur d'Alene School District 271 serves 10,300 students with its 2 high schools, 3 middle schools, an alternative high/middle school, a dropout retrieval school and 10 elementary schools. The district has a dedicated staff of 550 teachers, 47 administrators and 552 support personnel to provide quality education for the Coeur d'Alene, Hayden and Dalton communities. All schools are accredited and two high schools and one middle school have merit status. District staff and students have received numerous state and regional awards. Those include a Student Council of Excellence award for Lake City High School and a second place School of Excellence award for Coeur d'Alene high School from the Idaho High School Activities Association. The District is especially proud to be home of five of the past 10 Idaho Teachers of the Year. For the 11th year, the District has received a "What Parents Want" designation from SchoolMatch, a national family relocation business. District 271 provides myriad learning and enrichment opportunities to help students meet Idaho's Performance Standards. In addition to numerous Honors and Advanced Placement courses, Coeur d'Alene and Lake City High Schools began offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, and two of the elementary schools are implementing the IB Primary Years Program. District 271 students who qualify are also eligible for dual enrollment with North Idaho College and advanced technical and specialized courses at Riverbend Professional Technical Academy in Post Falls. A partnership with the City of Coeur d'Alene Police Department provides five School Resource Officers. Through an alliance with Kootenai Medical Center, the District is served by seven school nurses. University of Idaho Coeur d'Alene was established in 1980 to provide continued growth in a wide range of quality, educational, opportunities for northern Idaho residents. Current programs draw from the Colleges of Education and College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences. Undergraduate programs include degrees in elementary education, K-12 special education, environmental science and psychology; graduate degrees in Educational administration, curriculum and instruction, counseling and human services, Professional technical education, and adult and organizational learning; two specialist degrees; as well as certificate programs in environmental science and geographic information systems. Additional degree and certificate programs will be offered in the future. The UI-Cd'A collaborates with other educational institutions and community groups and has assumed an active roll in educational and research projects. The UI Research Park in Post Falls links economic development strategies with University research and technologies. The Northern Idaho Center for Higher Education (NICHE) is a coalition of UI, North Idaho College, Lewis-Clark State College and Idaho State University to combine services for expanded educational opportunities. Located in the Harbor Center at 1000 W. Hubbard, Suite 144 and 610 W. Hubbard, Lewis-Clark State College-Coeur d'Alene provides bachelor's degree completion programs to the residents of northern Idaho. The Coeur d'Alene Center offers a 2+2 degree collaborating with North Idaho College(NIC) in Business Administration, Business Administration w/accounting emphasis, Management, Hospitality Management, Communication Arts, Justice Studies, Nursing (BSN), Social Work (BSW), Interdisciplinary Studies, and Bachelor degree programs for A.A.S. graduates. Because of the cooperative articulation between North Idaho College and LCSC, all lower-division courses are available through NIC and upper-division courses through LCSC-Cd'A. Additionally, LCSC-Cd'A offers Pathways for Accelerated Certification and Endorsement (PACE); options for education through the Internet and summer workshops in Lewiston. Founded in 1933, North Idaho College is a comprehensive community college offering a wide array of academic, professional-technical, and workforce training programs. NIC's beautiful 44-acre campus is located on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene and the Spokane River making it a perfect setting for anyone that wants to pursue higher education opportunities at an award-winning community college. Credits earned for an associate of arts or associate of science degree transfer automatically to any Idaho public college or university.
